Barong Dance at Batubulan village
Barong is a Balinese mythological character. In the Balinese mythological tradition, he is the king of spirits, a good host leader and an enemy of Rangda. Banas Pati Rajah is the fourth “brother” or child spirit who accompanies the child in life. Banas Pati Rajah is Barong’s spirit.
The spirit of protection is often represented by lions, and a popular part of Balinese culture is the traditional performance of his struggle against Rangda. Barong dance with two monkeys is often photographed.

Barong and Kris dance like the kecak dance Barong and Kris dance is a battle between good and evil spirits. Barong can take various forms but in this dance he takes the form of the Barong Keket dance, the most sacred of Barong. Barong Keket is a strange creature, a dog half hairy, half lion and played by two people in the same way as a circus clown horse. His opponent is the Rangda witch.
Barong came with King’s army, and a battle ensued. Rangda chants a spell that makes Erlangga’s warriors all want to commit suicide, directing their poisonous kris to their own stomachs and chests. Barong said a spell that made their body resistant to sharp kris. In the end, Barong wins, and Rangda runs away.
The most famous dance, perhaps, is Barong. It’s also a dance story, a struggle between good and evil. This dance is a classic example of how mythology is portrayed by Balinese people, resulting in mixed myths and history.
After the show of Barong & Keris dance, our Bali trip journey will continue with below stop:

In the past, Celuk Village residents were mainly farmers. Rumors say that this industry was pioneered by only three families belonging to the Pande caste. This caste is renowned for its specialization in manipulating all kinds of metals to make Hindu prayer accessories.
As tourism became Bali’s main commodity, more and more villagers left their farms and began to learn silver and gold. In particular, nearly all villagers became silversmiths in 1976, and since then Celuk Village has been popular with beautiful jewelry and other silver crafts.

Mas Village is located in the district of Ubud and in the eastern part of Bali, Gianyar Regency. It has a distinctive style of wood carving by promoting synergies between naturalism and humanism.

The famous wood carver here is the deceased Ida Bagus Nyana and the son of Ida Bagus Tilem.
Along the way we can find many art shops that sell various types of wood carvings. On the left or right side of the road we can also see rice fields, so that we can conclude that the life of the Mas community is not only a wood carver but also as a farmer. Many visitors come to this village every day, they want to see or smell the wood and see the people there, how to make wood carvings.
This artistic countryside has long historical roots. The results of wood carving in this village have broad and immeasurable dimensions such as idol devotion (idol statues), a representative dimension of the life of everyday Balinese social communities (farmers, fishermen, workers, intellectuals, traders etc.), abstract dimensions as there is imagination actors who listen carefully to the reality, dynamics and philosophy of life.
The villagers are the same as the villagers in other tourist villages in Bali who also experienced a transformation from an agrarian community to a craft community. Even now, he continues to serve the community from trade services to providing souvenir services for foreign and domestic tourists.
Location of Mas Village
Mas Village is strategically located on the main road from Denpasar to Ubud and can be reached from various angles. Holly Spring temple of Pura Tirta Empul Tampak Siring
Pura Tirta Empul Bali was built at Tampak Siring around a sacred spring. Balinese worshippers have been attracted to Tirta Empul Temple for more than a thousand years, whose sacred springs are said to have been created by Indra and have healing properties. Tradition in today’s temple remains almost unchanged. Due to the healing power of the springs, the temple and its two baths were used by the public for good health and prosperity over 1000 years.
History of Tirta Empul Temple
The inscription mentions the construction of the Tirta Empul Temple in 960 AD, when it was ordered by King Chandrabhaya Singha Warmadewa 1042 years ago. It seems that this place was not attractive to ancient kings, but in 1954, the first President of Indonesia, Soekarno, built his presidential villa on the western side of the temple.
It was originally a residence for Dutch officials, which was then used during his frequent trips to Bali by former President Soekarno. This villa has also made the name Tampaksiring a world famous.
The current temple as a Balinese general temple, the layout is divided into 3 pages. On the center page is built and the first page is built:
Pool with 13 fountains, used as holy water for cremation or death ceremonies,
A pool of 8 fountains, used as water for symbolic cleansing (spiritual purification), when a person is sick is believed to be infected by impurities that are not material.
A pool with 5 fountains for holy water is used by people from outside come to pray.
On the first page there is also a pool for public bathing. The total number of sanctuaries in Tirta Empul Temple is 30 nits today, after which it was added by local people who have the responsibility for the temple. The ceremony is held every 210 days, and the date can still be read in the Balinese calendar.
There is an old stone statue preserved on the last page of the Tirta Empul Temple in the form of a buffalo. The carving condition is severely damaged, so it cannot be observed in detail to improve its type. The buffalo in the Hindu line is considered to be the mountain of the god Shiwa and this animal is called “Nandi
The name “Tirta Empul” signifies clear flow used as holy water for various religious ceremonies. Visitors are only allowed to go to the main page. From here, one can enjoy twin temples and split gates, which are common in most temples in Bali. Inside the inner sanctuary, there are a number of bathing pools for Hindus.
Tirta Empul Temple includes traditional Balinese split gates along with temples for Shiva, Wisnu, Braham, Mt. Batur, and Indra. There is also a large open pavilion on the main courtyard, useful for relaxing in the shade.
But the main attraction in Tirta Empul Temple is a long rectangular pool carved from stone, filled with koi and fed by a holy spring through 12 fountains. The devotees first make offerings in the temple, then go up to the main pool to bathe and pray. Many collect holy water in bottles to take home. Nearby are two small ponds which are fed by spring.
Pura Tirta Empul is located in the village of Tampak Siring, accessible by public transportation from Ubud. Souvenirs stand outside the temple which specializes in local crafts, carved bone jewelry.

The dramatic landscape of the village centers around the ancient volcanic caldera of ancient Mount Batur which has a deep, largest crater lake in Bali, and bubbling hot springs.
This village is also home to several temples. One of them is Pura Ulun Danu Batur on the edge of the crater that complements the stunning natural scenery of the village of Kintamani.
When tourism began to develop in Bali around 1965 a tour package called “Barong dance and Kintamani tour” was the most popular tourist day. The culmination of a tour that still exists today is a colony of Balinese artists, Tirta Empul Temple, and Batur Caldera.
According to some senior tour guides who have worked in this industry for more than 2 decades, some tourists from Europe and the US regularly come to Bali, for more than 5 times since the 1960s and every time they come they always repeat to see tour packages this.
It could be a real spirit of Balinese nature and culture mixed here that can provide a variety of inspirations, perhaps from small craft businesses to 5-star hotels or restaurants for those who see this as an opportunity. This has been proven by the extraordinary development of tourism facilities in Bali from the 1980s to 1995.
The author strongly believes that what the value of this trip has triggered other areas in Bali to be known in the tourism industry. Below is briefly explained how these 3 areas have attracted people from ancient times.
Kintamani with extraordinary views of the Batur caldera has been recorded in the king’s charter as follows:
- Inscriptions dated 911 AD, mentioning the king’s envoy to pray in the village of Trunyan, local residents were asked to serve messengers to prepare food and facilities during this religious trip. The people requested that His Majesty be released from certain taxes in lieu of services provided to the filgram.
- Inscriptions dated 911 AD, regulations for village members between Abang village and Trunyan village were issued by the king to protect their interests.
- Three inscriptions found in Kintamani dated 967 AD mention an inn (pesangrahan) in Air Mih, licensed by king Tabanendra Dharmadewa. It also states the entry or possible traffic of priests (monks) who come to the area and want to settle down. Regulated that newcomers may not exceed 10 families
- Only about 1 km north to Kintamani have been found various stone sculptures carved in 1011 AD by the main sculptor “Mpu Bga”, dedicated to the spirit of the king and ancestors
This proves that Kintamani is the oldest area in the history of Balinese. This could be due to the inspiring natural scenery and magical scenery. Sutan Takdir Alisyahbana, one the most famous Indonesian novelist, also built his guesthouse at the foot of Mount Batur, where he made many romatic literature creations or novels.
